History of Arkansas Valley Habitat for Humanity In January 1989, Mark Moll, Ann Smith and Charlotte Flanders attended a First Presbyterian Church Retreat at Subiaco Abbey, Arkansas. Dr. Jack Baker, one of the leaders from Oklahoma City, spoke about Habitat for Humanity. Charlotte and Mark came back to Fort Smith “fired up with enthusiasm”. After an organizational meeting in October, 1989 Arkansas Valley Habitat for Humanity officially became the 340th affiliate of Habitat for Humanity International. Our first house was built in the remaining months of 1989. Two homes were built in 1990 and three in 1991. We completed house #62 in 2006 and housed 5 more families in 2007. We are developing ambitious plans to build 7 more homes in 2008, 8 in 2009 and 9 in 2010.
